01In brief

The short answer.

The Research Nexus STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from policy, institutional and decision science to causal inference and impact evaluation. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the research and evidence field.

02Geography

Hazards and exposure in Europe.

For STEM foundation of research nexus, in GRF's situational-awareness reading, the map opens on population density, flood water and true-colour imagery, framed on Europe; 3 further NASA layers wait in the list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

04Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
STEM CommonsThe shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform.
Steward platformThe platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it.
Policy, institutional and decision sciencePolicy, institutional and decision science studies how public decisions are made, implemented and evaluated.
Probability and statisticsProbability and statistics provide the mathematical framework for describing uncertainty and learning from data.
05Why it matters

Grounding makes claims checkable.

When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.

07Questions

Questions and answers.

What is a steward platform?
The platform that maintains the canonical description of a method and reviews how it is applied across the Consortium.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
