Tonga Risks Forum
The Global Risks Forum – National Engagement Series: Tonga is an annual, hybrid-format initiative organized by NWG Tonga, a fully independent platform of national and international experts. Functioning without any affiliation to the Government of Tonga or political actors, NWG Tonga provides a trusted space for nonpartisan dialogue, research, and innovation in disaster risk reduction (DRR), disaster risk finance (DRF), and disaster risk intelligence (DRI).
This national initiative aligns with the global mission of the Global Risks Alliance (GRA) and Global Risks Forum (GRF)—to foster collaborative, systems-level responses to complex and cascading risks. The forum brings together diverse stakeholders from across the quintuple helix—academia, civil society, private sector, international partners, and government (in a non-organizing role).
Strategic Purpose
The Tonga edition is designed to:
- Address high-impact risks such as tsunamis, cyclones, sea-level rise, and food system disruptions;
- Promote community-centered resilience, drawing from ancestral knowledge, diaspora leadership, and frontier science;
- Strengthen adaptive capacity through participatory foresight, climate finance innovation, and inclusive policy design;
- Build connectivity between local actors and global knowledge systems to safeguard Tonga’s ecological and cultural heritage.
The forum emphasizes co-creation of sustainable solutions that reflect Tonga’s small island context, Indigenous governance traditions, and commitment to climate justice.
Governance and Participation
NWG Tonga operates with complete autonomy, in alignment with the principles of GRA and GRF. It is not affiliated with or accountable to any government or political institution, preserving the scientific, ethical, and collaborative integrity of the forum.
Participation is open to scientists, policymakers, Indigenous leaders, youth, civil society groups, regional institutions, and global allies. The forum is a space for shared learning, resilience-building, and systems innovation rooted in place-based wisdom and global solidarity.
Join the Movement
We welcome cultural stewards, sustainability practitioners, technologists, researchers, and Pacific allies to join the Global Risks Forum – Tonga Series as speakers, contributors, and co-creators. Together, we can shape equitable and adaptive futures that protect Tonga’s people, ecosystems, and knowledge systems—while connecting to a global network of resilient innovation.
