Professional practice: a programme through its gatesA request with a named owner becomes a scoping note; inputs are qualified at a gate; delivery runs in workstreams; a controlled test and an independent review precede publication; the owner decides. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

01In brief

The short answer.

Disaster and Crisis Governance practice notes compare how institutions put the governance of disaster and crisis as well as critical infrastructure into practice: approaches across jurisdictions, what worked, what did not and the conditions behind each. Notes are published with their limits so others can adapt them; they are not prescriptions, and GRF does not regulate, finance or certify.

02Geography

Hazards now in the Caribbean.

For professional practice, in GRF's situational-awareness reading, the map opens on population density, flood water and active fires, framed on the Caribbean; 3 further NASA layers wait in the list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

03Boundaries

Practice notes are not prescriptions.

GRF convenes and governs programmes. It does not regulate, finance, procure or certify, and hosting or sponsorship confers no authority over findings.

04Practice notes

Lessons that recur in after-action reports.

  • Warnings fail at the last mile when no one owns dissemination.
  • Incident command systems work when every agency trains in them, not only the lead.
  • Volunteers and spontaneous helpers need a planned place in coordination.
  • Recovery decisions made in haste rebuild the same risk.

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Comparative case studyAnalysis of several cases chosen to compare how context affects an outcome.
Lessons learnedDocumented knowledge from experience, positive or negative, recorded to change future practice.
Peer benchmarkingJudging a fund's performance against similar funds, which encourages similar allocations.
Build back betterThe Sendai Framework principle of using recovery and reconstruction to increase resilience to future disasters.
