01In brief

The short answer.

The Research Nexus regions page maps its work on research and evidence across the six Consortium regions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and North America. A regional entry appears only where a programme record supports it, with its status.

Regional dialogue: the policy cycleA problem reaches the agenda, options are formulated and appraised, consultation tests them, the mandate holder decides, implementation and monitoring follow, and evaluation feeds the next agenda. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Climate signals in World.

For regional dialogue, in GRF's situational-awareness reading, the map opens on population density, daytime surface heat and true-colour imagery, framed on World; 3 further NASA layers wait in the list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Regional research systems

Research capacity is unevenly placed against risk.

Research on hazards and governance is concentrated in a few countries, while exposure is concentrated elsewhere. Regional programmes on Research Nexus start from regional science bodies: the African Academy of Sciences, the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia, the Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences and the ISC regional focal points. Regional climate centres of the WMO add operational science.

  • Africa: links between African research councils and continental bodies such as Africa CDC and the AU Commission.
  • Asia and the Pacific: monsoon and disaster research networks connected to ASEAN and Pacific institutions.
  • Latin America and the Caribbean: regional climate and disaster research tied to CDEMA and CEPREDENAC needs.
06Status

Work is shown as its record stands.

Programmes are listed as exploring, forming, constituted, active, paused or archived. Country and regional entries appear when a programme record supports them.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
SubsidiarityThe principle that a decision is taken at the lowest level able to take it well, with a higher level acting only where the objective cannot be achieved closer to the people concerned; the Treaty on European Union states it.
Multi-level governanceShared decision-making across local, regional, national and international levels of government.
Programme statusThe recorded state of a programme on Nexus pages: exploring, forming, constituted, active, paused or archived. A plan is never presented as an activity.
